Concealed Handgun Permit
Requirements
As of January 1, 2021, as part of the Concealed Handgun Permit Application, the Circuit Court will no longer accept Online Courses for proof of the Gun Safety Course requirement. This is mandated by the State of Virginia.
New applicants are required to complete an in-person handgun safety course. A certificate verifying successful completion of the course must accompany your application.
- All applicants must be 21 years of age or older.
First Time Applicants:
- Applicants submit the Application for Concealed Handgun Permit SP-248 in person to the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county or city in which they reside. Note: Members of the United States Armed Forces apply in the county or city of domicile. Please submit all pages of the application.
- Bring one valid form of photo identification issued by a governmental agency of the Commonwealth, by the U.S. Department of Defense or the U.S. State Department (passport) when submitting the application.
- Bring proof of handgun competency as required by the Code of Virginia.
- Payment of the $20 Application fee is due at the time of application submission. We accept cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card. Payments in the form of check or money order should be made payable to King William County Circuit Court. This is a nonrefundable application fee.
- Bring a stamped, self-addressed envelope for use in mailing your permit.
Process for Renewals:
Permit Renewals
Once approved by the Court and processed by the Clerk's Office, your Concealed Handgun Permit is valid for five years. When filling out the application, please indicate in the appropriate box that you are renewing your permit. If your permit has expired, please check the box for resident permit, while providing your expired permit as proof of proficiency. In order to maintain your authorization, the application for renewal should be submitted to the Clerk's Office at least 90 days prior to, but no more than 180 days prior to the expiration of your current permit. The new permit becomes effective upon the expiration of the existing permit. When submitting your application for a renewal permit, please provide a copy of your current unexpired Concealed Handgun Permit to expedite processing.
- Persons who have previously held a concealed handgun permit submit the Application for Concealed Handgun Permit SP-248 by mail or in person to the Clerk of the Circuit Court in the county or city of residence. Please submit all pages of the application.
- If the application is sent by mail, it must be accompanied by a photocopy of the applicant’s valid photo identification (Virginia Code Section 18.2-308.010) and a photocopy of the existing or expired permit.
- $20 Renewal application fee - If you wish to mail your application, we accept check or money order. If you wish to apply in person, we accept cash, check, money order, or credit/debit card. Payments in the form of check or money order should be made payable to King William County Circuit Court.
- Provide a stamped, self-addressed envelope for use in mailing your permit.
Military personnel must attach a copy of their discharge or active-duty enrollment.
Law Enforcement agency personnel must attach a departmental letter.
All Concealed Handgun Permits granted by the Court will be mailed to the applicants. All Concealed Handgun Permit applications are SEALED. Virginia Code Section 18.2-308 renders all Concealed Handgun Permit applications confidential and not viewable by the general public.
