Hunting with Dogs
Laws Pertaining to Hunting with Dogs
Rights of Certain Hunters to go on Lands of Another:
Hunters may go upon prohibited land to retrieve their dogs but may not carry any firearms or bow and arrows on the persons or hunt any game while on that property. The use of a vehicle to retrieve dogs shall only be allowed if given permission by the landowner or his agent. In accordance with VA Code 18.2-136, any person that violates this code section is guilty of a Class 4 Misdemeanor
Hunting Dogs to Wear Tags:
All persons engaged in lawful hunting with dogs shall ensure that the dog has a tag identifying the name of the owner and a current phone number, in accordance with VA Code 29.1-516.2.
Removal of a Transmitting Device:
It is unlawful for any person who removes an electric or radio transmitting device from a dog without permission from the owner and with intent to hinder the owner from locating the dog. In accordance with VA Code 18.2-97.1, any person that violates this code is guilty of a Class 1 Misdemeanor.
Hunting Seasons:
- Deer- Third Saturday in November until the first Saturday in January
- Rabbit- Beginning of November through end of February
- Fox-Chase only season is all year around except during Firearm season
Living in a County with Dog Hunting:
Please be aware that this tradition has been part of culture for generations and that most hunters have a safe system of casting, running, and hunting with hounds.
- Posting your property makes it easier for others to know where your property lines are located.
- Hounds that pose a threat to your property, family, pets or livestock can be captured and reported to animal control immediately.
- Report any hunting violations you see by contacting Virginia Wildlife Crime Line(800-237-5712).
- Hounds that may appear lost can be collected or animal control should be called.
- If you call the owner information located on the hound’s collar, but the owner does not respond, call animal control.
